Mount Ijen Tour from Bali 1 Day – Blue Fire Adventure

About Mount Ijen (Ijen Crater)
Kawah Ijen, also known as the Ijen Crater, is one of the most fascinating active volcanoes in Indonesia. Located in East Java, this natural wonder is home to the largest acidic crater lake on the island of Java. The lake plunges to a depth of about 200 meters and contains steaming turquoise-colored water with an extremely high level of acidity — reaching as low as pH 0.1, making it the most acidic lake in the world.
Despite its intimidating nature, the Ijen Crater attracts countless travelers with its surreal beauty. The turquoise lake, surrounded by towering cliffs and volcanic peaks in the background, creates an otherworldly panorama that’s both mesmerizing and unforgettable.
The Magical Blue Fire Phenomenon
Beyond its breathtaking scenery, Kawah Ijen is world-famous for a rare natural phenomenon known as the Blue Fire. This mysterious glow can only be seen at night, caused by sulfuric gases that emerge from vents near the crater’s bottom. When these gases ignite at temperatures over 300°C, they produce bright electric-blue flames that dance across the rocks — a sight found only in Ijen Crater and nowhere else on Earth.
Due to its geological significance and stunning natural features, Kawah Ijen has been proposed as a UNESCO Global Geopark, further cementing its reputation as one of Indonesia’s most remarkable volcanic landscapes.
Itinerary – Mount Ijen Blue Fire Tour from Bali (1 Day 1 Night)
Your unforgettable journey begins in the evening. Our driver will pick you up from your hotel in Bali between 6:30 PM and 7:00 PM, depending on your location. The adventure starts with a scenic drive across Bali’s countryside to Gilimanuk Ferry Port on the island’s western tip — a journey of approximately 4 hours in a comfortable, air-conditioned private car.
Once you arrive, you’ll take a ferry across the Bali Strait to Ketapang Harbor in Banyuwangi, East Java. The crossing usually takes about one hour. Upon arrival, our local team will meet you and drive to Paltuding Base Camp, the starting point of the Ijen hike.
At around 1:00 AM, the adventure truly begins. You will be transferred by 4WD Jeep through scenic plantations and lush rainforest — one of the last remaining on Java — until you reach the base of the volcano. From there, the hike to the crater rim begins.
The trek takes about 1.5 hours along a moderate uphill path. As you ascend in darkness, you’ll witness the extraordinary blue fire — glowing vividly at the bottom of the crater. After experiencing this once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon, continue to the rim of the crater at 2,883 meters above sea level to enjoy the sunrise and a stunning view of the turquoise lake surrounded by sulfur clouds and rocky cliffs.
Sulfur miners can often be seen carrying heavy loads of solid sulfur up the steep paths — a humbling reminder of human endurance amidst nature’s power.
After spending time at the top, descend back to the parking area and enjoy a hearty breakfast at a local restaurant in Banyuwangi before heading back to Bali. The trip concludes when you arrive back at your hotel in the afternoon.
